Which Driveway Surface Is Right For You?
Four quick questions and we will point you to the surface that suits your home and budget.
This is a general guide to help you decide. Every property is different, so we always confirm the best option at a free site survey.
Comparing the main driveway surfaces
The quiz above gives you a starting point. This is how the three surfaces we lay most often compare, so you know what to ask about on the survey.
Tarmac
A continuous, hard-wearing surface that is laid hot and compacted. It suits larger areas and awkward shapes, and it is usually the most practical choice when you want a smooth, low-maintenance drive. Edging in block or stone gives it a more finished look.
Resin-bound
Stone mixed with resin and trowelled to a smooth, porous finish. It comes in a wide range of colours and drains water through the surface, so the ground beneath needs to be prepared properly and able to carry it.
Block paving
Individual blocks laid in patterns, which gives the most scope for design and colour. Individual blocks can be lifted and replaced if you ever need access underneath, but the surface needs sound preparation and edge restraint to stay level.
What affects the right choice
- The size and shape of the drive, and how it is used day to day.
- Ground conditions, levels and drainage, which we check on the survey.
- The look you want, and how it sits with the house and neighbouring properties.
- Whether you are resurfacing an existing drive or replacing it.
